Cell phone policy still on a trial basis

SAN DIEGO – As experiments go, count this one as a work in progress.

The PGA Tour began allowing fans to bring cell phones onto the golf course last year and this week's Farmers Insurance Open is the fourth 'trial' attempt for the new policy.

Torrey Pines is also a key litmus test for the policy since both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are in the field.

Despite repeated requests from marshalls on all tees and greens to keep cell phones in pockets officials had already confiscated 13 phones on Woods' first hole on Friday.
