Chemistry not always the key

SAN FRANCISCO – There is a lot to be said for chemistry in these team meet-and-greets (see: Mickelson, Phil and Woods, Tiger - Ryder Cup experiment), but not even the best of friends can guarantee success.

Hunter Mahan and Sean O’Hair, a pair of rising young stars, went down in Round 1 at Harding Park, 2 and 1, to Adam Scott and Ernie Els.

“It’s weird,” said Sean Foley, the swing coach for both Mahan and O’Hair. “They play together a lot, I mean almost every practice round and their games are so similar.”

The only foursome formula appears to be that there is no formula.
