Choi battling injury at Tour Championship

RSS

ATLANTA – Steve Stricker is not the only Presidents Cup player nursing an injury heading into this year’s matches. K.J. Choi, who began the day at the Tour Championship one stroke off the lead, has been hampered by an ailing right thumb since the PGA Championship.

According to Choi’s manager with IMG, the Korean started feeling discomfort about a year ago but the ailment flared up at Atlanta Athletic Club. To help ease the pain on Saturday, the tournament medical staff suggested he use a Lidoderm patch to numb the area and he has undergone numerous acupuncture treatments.

Doctors have told Choi the pain is probably the byproduct of a hyperextension of his thumb on the down swing which has caused the cartilage to deteriorate.

Choi’s next two starts are in Korea and his manager Michael Yim said they will likely have a MRI on the thumb during the trip.
