Choi is Johnny Milleresque on front nine

RSS

OAKMONT, Pa. – Na Yeon Choi made the turn with a 5-under-par 31 Sunday at the U.S. Women’s Open.

What course is she playing?

Johnny Miller shot 30 on the front nine on his way to a U.S. Open record 63 when he won at Oakmont in ’73 but the course was softened somewhat by rain. Despite Friday's rain this week, Oakmont’s playing fast and firm again today.

Choi made three birdies and eagled the ninth hole.

Seven back starting the day, Choi makes the turn just two behind Paula Creamer. Nobody’s come from more than five shots back in the final round to win the U.S. Women’s Open.

Choi vaulted to No. 8 in the world rankings after winning last week’s Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic. She was second at the State Farm Classic a month ago. If she wins today, she’ll spoil the American party this week and give the South Koreans three straight U.S. Women’s Open titles.
