LEMONT, Ill. – Tom Gillis birdied his first hole in the second pairing off this morning at the BMW Championship to quickly jump to the top of the leaderboard in the third leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
If you like to root for the underdog, Gillis, 42, is your man.
Or, better yet, your journeyman.
Entering the FedEx Cup Playoffs two weeks ago, Gillis ranked 140th in the world, a long shot to make it to the Tour Championship, where a top-30 FedEx Cup finish would get him into the dream events he’s never played before, like the Masters and the World Golf Championship events.
Still, that wasn’t the perk he was most focused on this week, a revelation of how much he loves the game.
“I’ve watched the Tour Championship on TV, and I like that golf course, East Lake,” Gillis said. “I’d really like to play that golf course.”
Gillis is the FedEx Cup's Cinderella Man. He starts this week 48th in FedEx Cup points with his eye on moving into the top 30 to earn that trip to East Lake.
