Erik Compton shot a 6-under-par 66 to make it through the Northern Trust Open Monday qualifier at Industry Hills Golf Club’s Eisenhower Course.
Compton, Bio Kim (66), Tim Wilkinson (66) and Jason Gore (67) all advanced into this week’s event from a field of 110 players in the 18-hole shootout.
“It was my first round in competition this year,” Compton said.
Compton, 31, said he almost didn’t make the trip to Los Angeles. He battled the flu all last week at home in Coral Gables, Fla., and wasn't sure he was up to the cross-country journey. He's been focusing more on building his body, strength and endurance than he has his golf swing this off season.
“I’ve been home the last few weeks watching Bubba Watson and Jhonny Vegas win,” Compton said. “My wife told me I need to get out there and play.”
Compton played with Watson at the University of Georgia.
In December, Compton made it to the final stage of PGA Tour Q-School, where he earned Nationwide Tour conditional status. He said he doesn’t have any PGA Tour sponsor exemptions lined up.
“I kind of dropped off the radar,” Compton said. “That’s OK, at the end of the day, I just have to play well.”
