Confident Simpson outshines Woods on Day 1

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. – As of June, Webb Simpson is a major champion. Other than that minor detail, he’s says he’s still the same guy.

“Off the golf course, nothing’s changed,” Simpson said. “But obviously when it comes to golf, (winning a major) has allowed me to be more confident.”

Simpson’s confidence is apparent; he shot 5-under 65 Thursday at The Greenbrier Classic, playing alongside Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker, and sits two off the pace set by Vijay Singh.

Simpson birdied his opening hole, a 385-yard par 4, and other than one bogey at the 15th, his sixth hole of the day, he never looked back.

“This course is all about keeping it in play because if you keep it in play, you can make some birdies,” Simpson said.

Simpson followed his U.S. Open victory last month with a T-29 at the Travelers Championship the following week and then took last week off.
