AUGUSTA, Ga. – For four days at Augusta National Fred Couples was young again.
The 53-year-old former Masters champion summed up this year's experience best.
“I know how to play the course,” Couples said Sunday. “I just played for about 40 minutes like a 7-handicap.”
The stretch Couples mentioned came late in Saturday’s third round when Couples was 5 over in a four-hole stretch. He was one shot off the lead after two rounds but a second-round 77 sent him well down the leaderboard.
Couples, 53, rebounded nicely Sunday to shoot 71, including birdie at the last hole. He ended the week at 1-under-par 287 and was tied for 12th place when he finished.
“I was not in a great mood yesterday, because if I just would have finished halfway, I could have come out today with a shot at winning,” Couples said. “And today was just really another fun day at Augusta.”
