Cut coming Saturday to trim field to 70 players

RSS

SAN DIEGO – When the dust settled after 36 holes, there were still too many players left at the Farmers Insurance Open.

A total of 83 participants made the cut at even-par 144 Friday at Torrey Pines, which means a second cut will follow Saturday’s third round in an effort to again trim the field to the low 70 players plus ties.

Among those who will begin the third round on the bubble are Bill Haas, Hunter Mahan and Nick Watney, who all made the cut on the number Friday in San Diego. The group of players tied for 50th at 1-under 143 includes Graham DeLaet, Bubba Watson and the world’s top-ranked player – Tiger Woods.

While an unexpectedly large group made it to the weekend, not every notable name survived beyond the halfway point at Torrey Pines. After a top-10 finish here a year ago, Rickie Fowler battled with a cold putter while shooting 77-70, and 2012 Farmers champion Brandt Snedeker completed two rounds at five-over 149, five shots off the cut line.
