Daly setting early pace

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – Fifteen years after his stunning win at the Old Course, John Daly is off to another rousing start at the British Open.

The mercurial American made the turn in the opening round Thursday with a 5-under 31, taking advantage of benign conditions that threatened to turn worse at any moment. He birdied the first two holes, and closed the front side with two more birdies.

Daly, whose personal woes have long overshadowed his occasional golfing successes, is also making quite an impression with his attire. He’s playing in purple paisley paints, a light blue sweater and a pink shirt.
