Daly withdraws from Web.com event with shoulder injury

Already likely facing an early exit, John Daly expedited his departure from the Stadion Classic at UGA by withdrawing after nine holes Friday, citing a shoulder injury.

A two-time major champ, Daly was playing on the Web.com Tour for the second consecutive week after finishing T-53 at last week's South Georgia Classic. He appeared to be headed for a missed cut this week in Athens, Ga., as Daly followed his 3-over 71 Thursday by playing his first nine holes Friday in 2 over, and through 27 holes had yet to record a single birdie.

Now 47 years old, Daly has not been fully exempt on the PGA Tour since 2007, instead relying on past champion status and sponsor exemptions to fill his schedule in addition to a handful Web.com Tour events, having also missed the cut at the Chitimatcha Louisiana Open in March. This season, Daly has made just two cuts in seven PGA Tour starts, with a T-50 result at the Puerto Rico Open serving as his best finish to date.

At the time of his withdrawal, Daly trailed tournament leader Daniel Chopra by 11 shots, and was four shots outside the projected cut line. According to his Web site, Daly's next start will come at another Web.com Tour event, the BMW Charity Pro-Am, held May 16-19 in Greer, S.C., while he is next slated to appear on the PGA Tour at the Crowne Plaza Invitational the following week.
