NEWPORT, Wales – Davis Love III may be the leading candidate to be the next American Ryder Cup captain, but he was so absorbed in the week’s action at Celtic Manor that he’s not so sure he’s ready to give up qualifying.
Love, an assistant captain to Corey Pavin, said he and European assistant Jose Maria Olazabal talked during the week about how the event affects them. Olazabal is a leading candidate to be Europe's next Ryder Cup captain.
“We talked about how badly we want to play,” Love said.
Love, 46, recorded three top 10s and finished 71st on the PGA Tour money list this season.
“Fred Couples texted me and said I have to make the Presidents Cup team,” Love said.
Couples is leading the American Presidents Cup team against the Internationals at Royal Melbourne in Australia next year.
