PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Leading the U.S. Open.
Brendon de Jonge likes the ways those words roll of the tongue.
“It’s got a pretty cool ring to it,” he said about grabbing a share of the first-round lead in his first U.S. Open.
So cool that de Jonge seems determined to hear it again today in the second round.
With birdies at his third and fourth holes, he grabbed sole possession of the lead.
De Jonge’s strength this year is hitting greens. He’s 11th on the PGA Tour in hitting greens in regulation.
De Jonge’s from Zimbabwe, where he grew up admiring fellow countryman Nick Price. He’s the 2008 Nationwide Tour Player of the Year.
