PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – U.S. Open defending champion Lucas Glover was unusually pumped up about his par at the final hole in Thursday’s opening round.
“Very excited,” Glover said. “I don’t usually fist pump on a Thursday.”
Glover was thrilled because he hit his last tee shot into the ocean, but he took a drop, slammed his second short of the green and got up and down.
Glover posted 2-over-par 73, not bad after opening the championship with a pair of bogeys. He started last year’s U.S. Open with a double bogey and went on to win.
“It was good day,” Glover said. “I fought hard. It’s an Open, and it’s a fight.”
