CARMEL, Ind. – Graham DeLaet is 36 holes from being the poster child of this year’s FedEx Cup playoffs.
DeLaet, David Hearn and Bob Estes are the only three players in the BMW Championship field who began the playoffs ranked outside the top 100. DeLaet was No. 106.
The 30-year-old Canadian followed an opening-round 64 with a 70 Friday in the second round at Crooked Stick and is tied for seventh place. He is projected as No. 37 in FedEx Cup points right now. The top 30 qualify for the Tour Championship at East Lake in two weeks.
DeLaet, who played only two PGA Tour events last year because of a back injury and started this year on a major medical exemption, has never played in a WGC event or a major championship. It he qualifies for the Tour Championship he will earn invites next year into the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, The Players and the WGC-Cadillac Championship.
“The goal today was not to really get ahead of myself and try to play solid golf,” DeLaet said. “I would have liked to have a couple more (birdies), but I’m right in there and got a chance.”
