Delays not a concern at this Open

TURNBERRY, Scotland – Still wet from the longest week of the year at Bethpage Black, and splashed by sunshine and warm temperatures at Turnberry on Wednesday, the possibility of weather delays this week seem as foreign as right-side steering wheels and baked beans for breakfast.

We asked PGA Tour official Mark Russell, who has “been coming (to the Open Championship) since the turn of the century,” if he recalled any rain delays and could not.

“They can play through anything,” Russell said. “We couldn’t do that in the U.S., but this place drains like a screen.”

An official with the Royal & Ancient Golf Club confirmed there was a 30-minute rain delay at the beginning of first-round play in 2004 at Royal Troon. More interesting, the last Monday finish at golf’s oldest championship was in 1988 at Royal Lytham & St. Annes.

It suddenly makes Bethpage seem like a distant memory.
