Donald clinches spot in Atlanta with final-round 66

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Luke Donald’s home-course advantage showed up at just the right time Monday.

The Chicago resident shot 67-66 over the final two rounds at Conway Farms to tie for fourth at the BMW Championship and sneak his way into the 30-man Tour Championship.

Donald entered the BMW at No. 54 in points and figured he needed a top-5 finish to make the season finale. He finished 28th in the standings.

“Certainly it’s always nice to be on familiar ground,” he said, smiling.

Donald’s final round wasn’t without a little drama. He bogeyed the 16th hole to sit right on the top-30 bubble, but he moved back in with a 6-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole. His 3-footer for par on the final green sealed his spot in Atlanta.

Donald has only recently begun seeing swing coach Chuck Cook, who also works with Jason Dufner, and the tidy Englishman has already seen some benefits. For the week, Donald was tied for first in approach proximity to the hole.

“I’m certainly starting to see a payoff,” he said. “I’m hitting it a lot better – being in more fairways, hitting more greens, and just giving myself less work for par.”
