Donald not afraid of Par 3 curse

RSS

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Luke Donald fans (or bettors), you may be cringing at home right now. Your man has won the Par 3 Contest, by a shot over Raymond Floyd and Angel Cabrera, at 5 under. While the win is great, no winner of the contest has ever taken home a green jacket that next Sunday.

The Englishman – the pick of Martin Kaymer as favorite this week, and others – is not afraid of the past link between the Par 3 Contest and tournament success.

“These things are bound to change. Someone’s going to break it, hopefully me,” Donald said.

But playing partner Tim Clark – the only of the last five Par 3 Contest winners to make the cut the year he won on the short track – believes in the curse. He asked Donald at one point, “When are you going to start hitting it in the water?”

Donald didn’t want to do that. He’s not afraid of a mystic set of repercussions for winning.

“I wouldn’t play in it if i believed in jinxes,” Donald said. “I’m not really superstitious, and I see it more as a challenge.”
