Donald to defend Scottish Open title

Luke Donald will return to Castle Stuart to defend his Scottish Open title next year, the European Tour announced Friday.

Donald won the precursor to the Open Championship in a rain-shortened, 54-hole event in July for his third of four worldwide wins in 2011. The world No. 1 closed with a final-round 63 to win by four shots over Fredrik Andersson-Hed.

Castle Stuart hosted the Scottish Open for the first time last season, drawing rave reviews.

“Of course, I’m over the moon to know that the Scottish Open is going back to Castle Stuart, a course I very much enjoyed,' Donald said in a release.

Barclays withdraw as title sponsor of the event after 14 years. The tournament has not announced a replacement for 2012.

On a preliminary schedule released on the European Tour website this week, the Scottish Open is set to be played July 12-15 in its traditional placement before the year's third major.
