SAN DIEGO – OK, so he’s never going to be confused for, say, Charles Howell III, but then the new-and-improved Phil Mickelson is hardly Charles Barkley either.
Along with that intense offseason regimen with Dave Stockton Sr. and Butch Harmon, Lefty also stepped up the intensity of his workout routine. He started the program earlier than normal and added an element called “power complex” to his workouts in an attempt to generate more body speed.
Before the sun came up Wednesday we joined Mickelson’s trainer Sean Cochran in a Solana Beach, Calif., gym for a look at Lefty’s new workout. One exhaustive hour later and the thought arises: we’ll never accuse Phil of being soft again.
