FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Contrary to popular belief Bethpage Black does not have a driveable par 4 for the final round.
Mike Davis, the senior director of rules and competition for the U.S. Golf Association, did move the tee up on the closing hole, but not to the extreme forward teeing ground some reports said he was considering.
Instead, Davis moved the tee up slightly because of a northern wind that was over the players' right shoulders and helping. To carry the green players would need to fly their golf balls 355 yards. “J.B. Holmes may be able to do that, but not too many others,” Davis said.
Moving the tee up allows players to carry the hole’s sprawling fairway bunkers but brings the rough into play more. It also helps officials avoid standing water situations at the bottom of the 18th fairway, which is the lowest point on the golf course.
