Dunlop winner Donald returns to world No. 2

RSS

It appears Luke Donald’s stay at world No. 3 will be brief.

With his five-shot, wire-to-wire victory at the Dunlop Phoenix in Japan, the Englishman is expected to rise to No. 2 in the world when the rankings are released Monday. It was Donald’s first victory since the European Tour’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Donald was last ranked second at the Deutsche Bank Championship, the second event in the FedEx Cup playoffs, but was passed by Tiger Woods, who won three times in 2012.

Before the past two months, Donald, who spent a total of 55 weeks at world No. 1, hadn’t been ranked No. 3 in the world since April 2011.

In his past 16 worldwide starts, he has finished outside the top 25 only four times. He will conclude his 2012 season this week at the European Tour’s season finale, the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
