Duval's homecoming starts well

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – David Duval feels the love.

Duval, who grew up in Jacksonville, was heavily supported while making his way around in 2-under-par 70 in his first appearance at The Players Championship since 2006. He won The Players in 1999.

“I have very true, dear fans,” Duval said. “I’ve been blessed that way.”

Duval, who went to No. 1 in the world with his victory at The Players, said he’s been touched by the number of fans who are rooting for him to win again, wherever he goes.

“Incredible, incredible to me,” Duval said.

Duval, a 13-time PGA Tour winner, is looking for his first title since winning the 2001 British Open. He repeated his desire to win for his family. Duval and his wife, Susie, have enjoyed taking their two young children to the beach this week and collecting shells and shark teeth.

“My son’s the best,” Duval said. “He’s probably found 200 shark teeth already this week.”
