Nigel Edwards will get another chance to captain Great Britain and Ireland’s Walker Cup team, it was announced Thursday by the R&A. He is the first man in the modern era to lead the squad for three terms.
Edwards, who competed in four consecutive Walker Cups from 2001-07, led Team GB&I to a stirring home victory in 2011 before a lopsided loss last September at National Golf Links of America. Edwards will also captain the St. Andrews Trophy for a third time this August.
The USGA has already announced that Spider Mill will lead the American team during the 2015 matches, which will be held Sept. 12-13 Royal Lytham and St. Annes in England. The U.S. leads the overall series, 35-8-1.
“I’m very proud to have the opportunity to captain the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team for a third time in 2015,” Edwards said in a release. “I am looking forward to continuing my involvement and using my past experience as both a player and captain to make sure the players are prepared to play to the best of their ability.”
Jonathan Plaxton, chairman of the R&A Selection Committee, said that Edwards has “proven to be very popular with the players and his experience in the amateur game will continue to be a tremendous asset as he prepares teams for the St. Andrews Trophy and the Walker Cup.”
