AUGUSTA, Ga. – Ran into PGA of America chief executive officer Joe Steranka under the big oak tree adjacent Augusta National’s first tee early Friday morning and the subject turned to Thursday’s joint announcement by the U.S. Golf Association and Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.
The announcement addressed a change to the Rules of Golf in the wake of a pair of high-profile disqualifications stemming from violations that were reported, after the fact, by viewers watching the telecast. Steranka, however, pointed out how quickly and efficiently the organizations were able to address the issue.
“It’s a credit to the World Golf Foundation that we’ve been able to address situations like this so quickly,” he said. “Much like the (Frank Chirkinian, who was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame via an emergency vote before succumbing to cancer in March) situation, we meet regularly now and it allows us to address these things in a much more timely fashion.”
