In the end, Euros more clutch than U.S.

PARKER, Colo. – The Europeans dominated the Solheim Cup with their closing skills.

“We thought 18 was probably one of the hardest holes on the course,” U.S. captain Meg Mallon said. “I don’t know how many times the Europeans birdied the 18th to win or close out or halve matches, but it was pretty impressive.”

Caroline Hedwall birdied the 18th hole to clinch the cup for the Euros in her 1-up victory against Michelle Wie in Sunday singles. It was one of six times the Euros birdied the 18th to win or halve a match in the event.

In the pivotal Saturday afternoon fourballs that the Euros swept 4-0, they won three of those matches with birdies.

“That’s pretty much what it came down to, the putts were made on their side,” Mallon said.
