AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta National may be revered as a golf course, but from a caddie’s point of view it is one of the more demanding, albeit enjoyable, walks in the game. That truth was magnified Saturday afternoon when the strap on Jason Day’s bag malfunctioned.
Day had just birdied the second hole to move to within one stroke of leader Rory McIlroy and was walking up the third fairway when the strap on his bag broke. Caddie Col Swatton lugged the bag three-quarters of the way to the hole before officials brought him two carry bags to pick a new strap from.
It didn’t seem to bother Swatton or Day on the hole. His birdie moved him into a tie for the lead although he gave both birdies back with bogeys at Nos. 6 and 7.
