Tom Watson and Paul McGinley will each have three captain’s picks at their disposal for the 2014 Ryder Cup.
McGinley, the European captain, announced the change Tuesday at the BMW PGA Championship.
The European team at Gleneagles will now be comprised of five players from the World Points list, four from the European Points list and three captain’s selections. Only once (2010) since 1993 have the Europeans used three wildcard picks at the Ryder Cup.
“I’ve done that to give myself a little bit of extra flexibility when it comes to making my selections,” McGinley told reporters in England. “Hopefully this will ensure that I have the right players to face the examination paper that Gleneagles will set out next September.”
The World Points List will comprise the world-ranking points gained in officially sanctioned events around the globe during the qualification process, which begins Sept. 5-8 at the ISPS Handa Wales Open.
In March, Watson trimmed his number of captain’s selections, from four to three.
