John Parry, a 24-year-old Challenge Tour graduate who won the Vivendii Cup the week before the Ryder Cup, holds a four-shot lead, but four Ryder Cup teammates are in pursuit in Scotland. Ross Fisher and Martin Kaymer enter the weekend in a tie for third. Graeme McDowell is one shot behind them in solo sixth, followed by Padraig Harrington who is tied for seventh.
Looking further down the board Francesco Molinari is T-17 and new world No. 2 Lee Westwood is T-32.
Reports are that Westwood is feeling the pain from his calf injury and considered pulling out of the event to rest his muscles and prevent further injury. As of now Westwood is still slated to tee it up this weekend, but his chance at taking over the No. 1 spot in the world this week is unlikely. The Englishman needs to finish in a three-way tie for second or better to knock Tiger Woods from the top spot. He trails Parry by 10 shots at the halfway point.
