The European Solheim Cup team is looking like it is well on its way to an overhaul.
If the team was selected today, there’s the strong possibility six or more players from the 2011 European team that beat the Americans in Ireland won’t be on the roster. Eight players from that squad have yet to qualify with just three events remaining before the team is named for the Aug. 16-18 matches at Colorado Golf Club.
European captain Liselotte Neumann led nine players around Colorado Golf Club Tuesday in a scouting visit and media day. Five of those players have never played in a Solheim Cup: Spain’s Carlotta Ciganda, Germany’s Caroline Masson, Sweden’s Pernilla Lindberg, England’s Charley Hull and the Netherlands’ Dewi Claire Schreefel. Solheim Cup veterans Anna Nordqvist, Maria Hjorth and Caroline Hedwall of Sweden Sweden and Gwladys Nocera of France also made the trip
The Euro team will be made up of the top four off the Ladies European Tour Solheim points list and then the top four off the Rolex world rankings who are not already qualified on points.
Given the number of veterans who are not yet within qualifying, Neumann could have some tough choices for her four captain’s picks.
So far, Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall, Germany's Sandra Gal, England’s Laura Davies, Karen Stupples and Melissa Reid, Sweden’s Sophie Gustafson and Maria Hjorth and the Netherlands’ Christel Boeljon have not yet qualified. They all helped the Euros beat the Americans, but Hedwall and Gal are the only players among them ranked among the top 100 in the world.
If the team were named today, Norway’s Suzann Pettersen, Scotland’s Catriona Matthew, Spain’s Carlota Ciganda and Masson would qualify off the points list. Nordqvist, Spain’s Azahara Munoz and Beatriz Recari and France’s Karine Icher would qualify off the world rankings.
Here is how European qualifying shapes up:
