Evel Knievel's son looking to qualify for U.S. Open

Evel Knievel was known for his death-defying motorcycle jumps. His 51-year-old son, Kelly, took the leap into U.S. Open qualifying on Thursday.

The younger Knievel filed an entry to qualify for the year's second major, played at Olympic Club in San Francisco from June 14-17.

Knievel is an accomplished player, carrying a handicap index of .6. His daredevil father played, too, to a single-digit handicap before his death in 2007.

Last May, Kelly fell in a playoff to 17-year-old Taylor Montgomery for the Southern Nevada Amateur. He also is a past winner of the Las Vegas City Amateur title.

Sin City has been Knievel's home since 1982, where he owns a small construction business.
