Following the death of Nelson Mandela, tournament organizers at the Nelson Mandela Championship indicated that the event's dates will be adjusted next week to accommodate the funeral of its namesake.
Originally scheduled to be played Dec. 12-15 at Mount Edgecombe Country Club in Durban, South Africa, the tournament will now begin on Wednesday, Dec. 11 and conclude on Saturday, Dec. 14. While Mandela will lie in state Wednesday through Friday of next week, his state funeral and burial will be held on Sunday.
The event is co-sponsored by the European Tour and the Sunshine Tour and is set to appear on the official European Tour schedule for the second year. Scott Jamieson won the title last year, emerging from a two-hole playoff over Steve Webster and Eduardo de la Riva.
Formerly president of South Africa, Mandela died Thursday at the age of 95 after battling a series of health issues in recent months. The tournament in Durban benefits the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, an homage to the various charity efforts to which Mandela contributed.
