Father-Son Challenge could return this year

The Father-Son Challenge, a silly season event not played since 2008, could be held this December for the first time in four years.

'We're confident that we can get [a contract] done,' said Alastair Johnston, vice chairman of IMG Worldwide, according to Golf World.

NBC Sports, who co-owns the event with IMG, would air the 36-hole event just before Christmas. A venue and sponsor still need to be finalized.IMG is hopeful to make a formal announcement about the return of the event in the next month.

In the past, the field has comprised of 18 two-man teams. The professional father in the field must have won a major championship, though the son has not always been the offspring of the pro. Lee Janzen has played in the past with the late Payne Stewarts son, Aaron.

The rekindled tournament could also introduce a competition for the amateurs to run concurrently with the team event, according to the magazine.

Three-time major champion Larry Nelson and his son, Drew, won the last edition held at ChampionsGate Resort near Orlando. They had established a minor dynasty in the event, winning three of the final five played ' splitting the series with Bernhard and Stefan Langer.
