NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. – From just left and long of the pin at the par-3 fifth hole Jason Day three-putted from 45 feet on Saturday at AT&T National to give up ground to Justin Rose, and he was lucky to get down in three.
On Wednesday during his practice round Jonathan Byrd eyed the same middle-right pin position wearily because, “I draw the ball and knew I’d be in trouble if I was long and over that ridge.”
But then the fifth wasn’t the only diabolical pin position awaiting the field on Saturday. Even pseudo-host Tiger Woods mentioned how much more difficult it was on Saturday getting the ball close to the hole.
“There are some doozies out there,” said Byrd, who carded a third-round 68. “It’s like Pinehurst, you expect it. They put it on a knob and it’s really tough to get anywhere close.”
Just ask Day.
