Filled Up: Kraft wins his way on Walker Cup

RSS

ERIN HILLS, Wis. – Kelly Kraft literally won a spot on the U.S. Walker Cup team.

He joins Blayne Barber, who will be a junior at Auburn in the fall, and Jordan Spieth, the two-time U.S. Junior winner headed to the University of Texas as a freshman, as the three final additions to the team.

Not on the radar of observers handicapping the prospects for the American team, Kraft’s U.S. Amateur victory Sunday gained him a spot on the 12-man roster that will play Great Britain & Ireland on Sept. 11-12 at Royal Aberdeen in Scotland.

“Dream come true,” said Kraft, an SMU standout whose eligibility expired after this past season. “Making the Walker Cup is just amazing, but I couldn’t have done it without winning here. I’m just excited to go over to Scotland and beat up those guys.'

In a surprise, NCAA champ John Peterson, who finished runner-up in a Nationwide Tour event this summer, didn't make the team.

Previously named to the American squad were Patrick Cantlay, Harris English, Russell Henley, Patrick Rodgers, Nathan Smith, Peter Uihlein and Chris Williams.
