Finchem mulls Players problem

RSS

SAN DIEGO – First it was world No. 1 Lee Westwood. Now his stable mate Rory McIlroy has announced he will also miss this year’s Players Championship. But if the European exodus from the PGA Tour’s marquee event is concerning commissioner Tim Finchem he’s not telling.

Asked on Tuesday at Torrey Pines what could be done to stem the tide of European indifference the commissioner didn’t seemed overly concerned toward golf’s “fifth major.”

“I’m disappointed,” Finchem said. “But I never really second guess a player as it relates to his schedule. . . . The European Tour needs to be a strong tour, they’ve struggled more than we have. Candidly, it’s better for them to play in Europe.”

“Shag Bag” is not so sure the first four majors would be as magnanimous.
