First 54-hole lead for Spieth

RSS

KAPALUA, Hawaii – Last year, Jordan Spieth often moved the wrong way on Moving Day.

It’s difficult to knock the kid who took the golf world by storm, winning before his 20th birthday and competing in the Tour Championship and Presidents Cup. But even Spieth will acknowledge that a third-round scoring average of 71.33 – more than a full stroke worse than his average in any other round – needed to improve.

“Third rounds were a struggle last year and it was mainly because of my patience,” he said.

So far he’s 1-for-1 in the new year.

Spieth posted a third-round 4-under 69 to grab a share of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions lead alongside Webb Simpson and Dustin Johnson. It will mark the first time he’s held or shared a PGA Tour lead going into the final day.

“This is a new position for me,” he said. “I've never slept on a 54-hole lead. I'm excited about it and it's going to be a fun time tomorrow to get to play with Webb I think for the third time again this week. We were able to feed off each other in the first round and yesterday, and hopefully can do it tomorrow.”
