Over the four years that the FedEx Cup has existed, a handful of guys have played their way into the Tour Championship each year. Halfway through the FedEx Cup playoffs, all five of those guys still have a chance to remain perfect in running the playoff gauntlet from The Barclays to East Lake.
Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker and Hunter Mahan have made it to the FedEx finale since 2007. They’re all in the field at Cog Hill in two weeks, with three of them in great shape to make it to a fifth consecutive Tour Championship.
Stricker at eighth, Mickelson at 11th and Mahan at 18th are virtual locks for a trip to Atlanta. Furyk and Els have some work to do, though. Furyk sits at 35th and Els is 68th heading into Chicago.
If both players found their way into Atlanta, each would make history. Furyk would become the first FedEx Cup winner to get back to East Lake in the year after they won the $10 million bounty. Els would become just the third player to qualify for the playoffs between 101st and 125th, then proceed to march through the first three playoff events to get to the finish.
