The PGA Tour announced its marquee season-ending awards last week and the Comeback Player of the Year announcement is expected any day. But unlike the European Tour the American circuit ignores its blue collar class – caddies.
In Europe fellow caddies vote on the award, which was given to Graeme McDowell’s man Ken Comboy this year. At last week’s Chevron World Challenge “Shag Bag” did his own, wildly non-scientific polling for 2010’s best bagman.
Among those getting votes was Matt Kuchar’s caddie Lance Bennett and, in a bit of a polling surprise, Tiger Woods’ man Steve Williams.
“(Williams) worked harder than ever and was there for Tiger on and off the course,” said one caddie. “This was a tough year to have that job.”
The runaway winner, however, was Jim Furyk’s man Mike “Fluff” Cowan. Furyk won three times, the FedEx Cup trophy and Player of the Year and Cowan made his 10th Ryder Cup appearance. “Tough to beat that,” figured one looper.
