CHASKA, Minn. – Rees Jones and the PGA of America almost got it right. The company line this week is that Hazeltine National had one par-5 (572-yard seventh) and three runways that had to be survived, not overpowered.

But then Spanish smasher Alvaro Quiros let fly a pair of drivers on the 606-yard 11th hole on Thursday, reaching the green to the shagrin of the group in front of him. A group that included leader Tiger Woods and Padraig Harrington.

“That was just stupid long,” Woods said of Quiros’ exhibition at the PGA Championship.
Fred Couples, who played with Quiros, added, “He’s a blast.”

For his part, Quiros did not understand what all the fuss was about: “It was about 265 meters (290 yards for his second shot), but I didn’t think I could reach. I apologize (to Woods and Harrington),” he said.

“I told him, ‘Nothing to apologize for, it was a heck of a shot,’” Woods said.
