Fourball match-ups and predictions for Day 1

The Day 1 fourballs match-ups were released Thrusday afternoon for the 38th Ryder Cup. The matches begin Friday at 2:45 a.m. ET (7:45 a.m. local time) at Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, Wales.

Here are the match-ups, as well as a scouting report and prediction for what will take place:

2:45 a.m. – Phil Mickelson-Dustin Johnson (U.S.) vs. Lee Westwood-Martin Kaymer (Europe)

Scouting report: Lefty has become a mentor for America’s young cup players and this pairing is a natural. It may also get the U.S. side on the board early considering that Westwood hasn’t played any meaningful golf since the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in August (U.S., 2 and 1).
3 a.m. – Stewart Cink-Matt Kuchar (U.S.) vs. Graeme McDowell-Rory McIlroy (Europe)

Scouting report:
Few have been as consistent as Kuchar this fall but at East Lake he looked like he was running on empty and the Northern Irish duo will be tough for any tandem to beat (Europe, 2 up).
3:15 a.m.
– Steve Stricker-Tiger Woods (U.S.) vs. Ian Poulter-Ross Fisher (Europe)

Scouting report:
Little surprise captain Corey Pavin went straight to the Stricker-Woods combo, which went 4-0 in team play last fall at Harding Park (U.S., 1 up).
3:30 a.m
. – Bubba Watson-Jeff Overton (U.S.) vs. Luke Donald-Padraig Harrington (Europe)

Scouting report:
Not sure what Pavin was thinking here but sending out two high-energy rookies in the morning session at an overseas Ryder Cup is the equivalent of a concession. Even an off-form Harrington has little trouble with the surprise American pairing (Europe, 4 and 3).
