CARMEL, Ind. – Rickie Fowler didn’t make the U.S. Ryder Cup team this year, but he won a nice consolation prize Sunday by securing his first trip to the Tour Championship.
Fowler closed clumsily at the BMW Championship with a 2-over-par 74, but it was good enough to hold onto his top-30 spot in FedEx Cup points and advance to East Lake in Atlanta Sept. 20-23. Fowler was 28th in points when he signed his scorecard.
Fowler, 23, earned his first Tour Championship trip in his third PGA Tour season.
“It’s been a goal of mine all year,” Fowler said. “My three goals were to win, get to the Tour Championship and make the Ryder Cup team. We’re going to fall one short, but two out of three isn’t bad.”
Fowler claimed his first PGA Tour victory at the Wells Fargo Championship in May.
