DUBLIN, Ohio – Not sure what Charlie Rymer would make of Rickie Fowler’s Day 2 outfit at Muirfield Village, or whether the big man could pull off the white skater’s hat pulled low on his head, but the front-running phenom made it clear he dresses to impress no one.
“I didn’t want to just fit in,” Fowler said following his second-round 66 left him at a 36-hole tournament-record 131, four shots clear of the field. “I wore big belt buckles through college with OSU (Oklahoma State) on them or a white belt in high school, which the white belt really hadn’t come back yet.”
Follow-up question: Has the white belt made a come back?
As a side note, Fowler is scheduled to play in Monday’s 36-hole U.S. Open qualifier at nearby Lakes Golf & Country Club and Brookside Golf & Country Club and when he was informed that not even a victory this week would qualify him for Pebble Beach the 21-year-old just shrugged, “I’m playing Monday.”
