Freedom of tweet? European Tour fines player for criticism

The European Tour has slapped player James Morrison with a fine for a tweet criticizing Wales Open host Celtic Manor earlier this month.

Morrison tweeted his displeasure with the venue on June 2, saying, 'Thanks Celtic manor. Dump! One more round then can't get over that bridge quick enough!'

The Tour said Thursday it will sanction players for 'offensive, threatening, disparaging, hurtful or otherwise' comments in any public media. A memo to players further detailing the policy was posted at the BMW International Open in Germany on Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

Despite an apology, Morrison will be fined for his tweet.

The PGA Tour maintains a similar policy, stating players should not 'unreasonably attack or disparage tournaments, sponsors, fellow members, players or (the) PGA Tour.' Reasonable, legitimate criticism is permitted.

If a PGA Tour player breaks decorum, they would be subject to a fine for 'conduct unbecoming a professional.'
