A Frenchmans bid comes up short

RSS

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Gregory Havret came within a shot of producing one of the greatest upsets in major championship history.

Paired with Tiger Woods, no one gave the affable Frenchman a chance of playing well Sunday at the U.S. Open. And contending seemed out of the question.

Instead, he went toe-to-toe with giants Woods, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els and took them each of them down. The only man Havret, 33, couldn't beat was champion Graeme McDowell, who shot even par for the championship. Havret made two birdies and three bogeys to shoot 72 and end at 1 over.

'Ill have a great night and some fantastic memories,' Havret said. 'To have this experience will make me stronger.'
