BETHESDA, Md. – Jim Furyk always gets a little extra help at Congressional Country Club. His caddie is a member here.
Mike “Fluff” Cowan is a longtime member of the venerable club and while Furyk maintained that they still have to work on sightlines because the members play from a different set of tees, Cowan can be extra beneficial on the greens.
He certainly was on Thursday, as they opened the AT&T National with a 2-under 69 that put Furyk’s name near the top of the leaderboard.
“I think it's good,” Furyk said afterward. “He's been a pretty big asset on the greens, and there's a couple putts out here where he'll say, ‘Hey, I know it looks like it's going to go left, but it doesn't go as much as we think,’ and he'd probably be right.”
For the day, Furyk made three birdies and just one bogey, though he did need 30 putts.
