McDowell, who now pens a column for the BBC website, said that, after examining the points lists and crunching the numbers, he already sees four locks on the European side: Henrik Stenson, Victor Dubuisson, Thomas Bjorn and Jamie Donaldson.
“None of them played at Medinah last time,” McDowell wrote, “so it’s clear some good players are going to miss out and I’m acutely aware it could be me.”
Both teams, it appears, have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to filling out a 12-man roster. With much golf to be played, of course, it is clear that players such as McDowell, Lee Westwood and Luke Donald will need to perform well in the spring and summer to ensure that they’ll be part of the squad that heads to Gleneagles with captain Paul McGinley.
“What I was trying to say in the article was that I want to get stuck into my processes this season and let the Ryder Cup get in the way,” he said this week at Pebble Beach. “It’s not something that I’m going to be getting obsessed by.”
