FORT WORTH, Texas – Much is made when a player, normally a European Tour member, skips The Players Championship, but it should be noted that Louis Oosthuizen and Sergio Garcia, both European Tour members, are playing this week in Texas instead of at the BMW PGA Championship, the European circuit’s flagship event.
For Oostuhuizen, who tied for seventh at Colonial, the decision was based on scheduling. The South African needs to assure he gets in his PGA Tour-minimum 15 starts.
That’s become a problem in recent years for international members since the Tour began the FedEx Cup playoffs, which feature progressively smaller fields that players aren’t guaranteed to play.
Garcia’s decision to skip Wentworth is more mystifying considering he played last week’s Volvo World Match Championship in Europe. Just three of the Spaniard’s 10 starts this season have been exclusively European tournaments, although the World Golf Championships are counted as starts on both tours.
Garcia is tied for 34th at the Crowne Plaza.
