Garcia trying to stay alive in playoffs

NORTON, Mass. – Every birdie counts on the bubble.

Sergio Garcia started the Deutsche Bank Championship 71st in FedEx Cup points. The top 70 move on to the BMW Championship next week.

Garcia was projected at 73rd in FedEx Cup points as he teed it up at the 17th hole Sunday morning. After closing with a pair of birdies and shooting 3-under-par 68, he left the course projected to finish 69th in points.

Of course, the projections change throughout the day and Garcia has Monday to significantly improve his position. Ultimately, he needs to get to the BMW and among the top 30 to make it to the Tour Championship.

“I am just trying to shoot the best score I can,” Garcia said. “If that gets me to next week, perfect. If not, I’ll go back home and relax, which I’m looking forward to doing. For me, it’s a win-win situation.”

It’s Garcia’s fifth consecutive PGA Tour event, his 16th of the season.
