Garcia on Tiger incident: 'I was the victim'

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Tiger Woods laughed last, winning The Players Championship to claim his fourth title this season.

But Sergio Garcia couldn’t resist getting in the last word, literally.

Wrapping up the controversy that dominated the weekend at TPC Sawgrass – gamesmanship or an ill-timed club selection? – Woods and Garcia both said Sunday that they had no regrets for how the situation went down at the second hole in the third round.

The Spaniard, however, took it a step further.

“I don’t know, it sounds like I was the bad guy here,” Garcia said after the final round. “I was the victim. I don’t have any regrets or anything.”

In the winner’s news conference afterward, Woods refused to once again get caught up in the war of words.

Asked if his win was particularly satisfying, given the kerfuffle with Garcia, Woods replied, “We just go out there and play. I had an opportunity to win the golf tournament when I was tied for the lead, and I thought I handled the situation well and really played well. That’s something I’m excited about.”
